Salem is a city and a Municipal Corporation in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Salem, which is also called  Mango city,  is  located in the North Central part  of the state, about 340  kilometres  (211miles) southwest  of the  state capital, Chennai. Salem is a Geologist’s  paradise,  surrounded  by  hills and the landscape dotted with hillocks.  Salem has a vibrant culture dating back to the ancient Kongu Nadu. As a district, Salem has its significance in various aspects.

  •  Iron ore is copious in Salem. Salem has been the chief centre of supply of the finest steel throughout historical times and iron was a historical mark of Salem's contact with the western world in ancient times. J.M.Health prized that the tools used by the Egyptian sculptors may have been made of Salem Steel. It is a public sector company engaged in rolling out cast steel slabs into sheets of required dimension by cold and hot rolling.

  • Government Museum
  • The museum, started in 1979, has been the main attraction of many till it was shifted from its British-built tiled building at the heart of the city to the Music School premises on Saradha College Road. This museum has a rare collection of many important sculptures, artifacts and pieces that recall and showcase the glory of a hoary past of the Salem region in ancient Tamilnadu.  People who are curious to visit the museum may come between 9.30am to 5.00pm except on Fridays, second Saturdays and on other National Holidays.

  • Mettur Dam
  • Mettur is a dam in Tamil Nadu, which is situated about 30 kms from Salem. Mettur dam is one of the largest of its kind in the world. It was constructed in a gorge where the river Cauvery enters the plains. This is a hydro-electric power station, which produces 240 megawatt power. There is also a beautifully decorated garden. Visitors can visit in the middle of 9.00am to 5.30 pm.

  • Yercaud Hill Station
  • Yercaud is a fascinating hill station of Tamil Nadu, situated about 8 kms from Salem. It is situated at an altitude of 5000 ft. It has a very pleasant weather and the temperature here never rises beyond 29°C and never falls below 13° C.  Yercaud has neither a biting winter nor a scorching summer. So, it is an ideal place to go around throughout the year and it is ideal for trekking.

  • Anna Park is a garden, very nice place to spend in the leisure hours. It’s located at near four Roads, Salem. A park for all kind of people with small slides for the kiddies to play and slight exciting games dashing car, Anna park train, Giant Wheel, Columbus, Tora-Tora and jumping frog.
